But Cirroc Lofton, who played Sisko’s son Jake, still doesn’t think Brooks gets enough credit for the pioneering role he played on “Deep Space Nine” as a capable Black leader and caring single father. The show also featured the first Black starring character in “Trek,” casting Avery Brooks as Commander (and later, Captain) Benjamin Sisko. Nana Visitor, who played the space station’s second in command, Kira Nerys, says “Deep Space Nine” is a “Trek” series that highlights the difficulty in bringing diverse cultures together equally - a struggle reflecting where the world is right now. That’s a huge legacy that we gave to the franchise.” “I think we made ‘Star Trek’ that much more real. “We recognized the problems with authority, we recognized the problems of a bunch of different races living together…things that were automatically accepted in the previous “Star Trek” shows were questioned on our show,” said Shimerman of the series, set in a bustling space station. Picard’s third and final season has now wrapped, sparking headlines and a deluge of fan affection for its kinetic, updated storyline reuniting the principal cast from “The Next Generation.” But the show’s characters and storylines have emerged as an extended love letter to three Trek TV series which aired from the late 1980s to the early 2000s: “Next Generation ,” “Deep Space Nine,” and “Voyager.”Īs the series which arguably got the most criticism for its pointed and repeated departures from traditional “Trek,” “Deep Space Nine” may also be the most vindicated by the repeated references in “Picard” – prompting a re-examination of the series as it celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. “If I had his approach from day one, the world would be very different.” “ was both cunning and oily and believable and less cartoonish … it would have been an entirely different species if I had played a Ferengi as well as that actor played it,” said Shimerman, who developed a reputation on the “DS9” set for resisting attempts to turn the greedy, trollish-looking characters into one-dimensional comic relief. ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Clip Takes Crew on a Bar Tour - Exclusive “I turned to my wife and said, ‘That’s the way I should have played the Ferengi from the first,’” said Shimerman, who played one of the aliens in their first TV appearance, a 1987 episode of “ Star Trek: The Next Generation” called “The Last Outpost.” Later, Shimerman would become the actor who helped define the race onscreen, playing Ferengi nightclub owner Quark on the syndicated series “ Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” for the show’s seven-season run. This method is now legal in all Pennsylvania counties, except Allegheny and Philadelphia. The use of purple paint has also become a popular method to post a property in more than 10 other states, making it understandable to many non-resident visitors as well. Most importantly, the stripes are cheaper and easier to maintain, and they are not as prone to damage, decay, or malicious removal. While No Trespassing signs and fences still remain legal methods to post a property as well, the use of purple paint stripes offers several advantages. Also in the law are updates that clarify the act of “criminal trespass." If you want to see more of JP's work check out his Instagram.Commonly called the “Purple Paint Law," this legislation (House Bill 1772) allows landowners to post their property against trespassing using simple purple stripes painted on trees or fence posts. Try shooting it in different ISO and see how different the colors get. It's a different experience than your typical color negative film. My friend (Devan Holt) shot Lomo Purple on 6x17 and it just looked amazing.Īny advice you’d like to share with future LomoChrome Purple users? Aside from that maybe a different format. I do want to experiment with color filters and see how the film reacts to different colors but mainly curious how the greens would turn out. If you were to shoot another roll of LomoChrome Purple 2021 Pétillant, would you do anything different? The first roll I shot had darker purples which in most cases I would like because of the contrast but I really enjoyed the lighter shade of purple the new formula offered. I rated my first Lomo Purple film at box speed and this new one at 320, I don't know if it's the slight over exposing but the new batch has a lighter purple tone which I really like. Have you shot with LomoChrome Purple before? If so, how do you like this formula compared to the previous LomoChrome Purple film? If you could sum up your Purple experience in three words, what would they be? I would be a little bit more picky with my scene and photos (when shooting Lomo Purple.) I would go out of my way to get a shot of something green or if I know I'm going to a specific location that has greens then I'll have this film stock in mind to shoot it there. Is your process of shooting with LomoChrome Purple any different than your process of shooting with regular color negative or black and white film? It just worked out quite well that the film complimented her dress at the same time. I knew what Lomo Purple can do with greens so we chose a location that had lots of trees and grass. Not the outfit that Elana was wearing (I think she was wearing a blue and black striped dress) but the scene was definitely planned. The color of your subject’s outfit and the natural setting contrast very well together, was this planned ahead of time with the color shift in mind? I rated this film at 320 to over expose it a bit, nothing too crazy, just to see how that would affect the purple tones. I think going into it I had a specific idea in mind because you know what this film stock can do as far rendering the greens, and you would want to take advantage of that - unlike shooting your typical color negative that you can just shoot anything and everything.ĭid you experiment with the extended ISO range of this film? I really enjoyed shooting the new LomoChrome Purple film. I do a lot of street portraits and the occasional vintage car photo here and there.Ĭould you share your experience using the LomoChrome Purple 2021 Pétillant Film? How was it compared to shooting other regular Color Negative film? My name is JP and I'm photographer from Bay Area, California. Hello, could you tell us about yourself and your work? He also got a private pilot's license and began making trips to the Pacific Northwest. in 1968 as a senior marketing engineer helping to set up assembly lines to build the L-1011 jumbo jet. Around the same time, Butler took a correspondence course from the American Institute of Theology and became an ordained minister of Christian Identity, the theology practiced by Swift.īutler was hired by Lockheed Aircraft Co. He chose Butler to be its national director, a post Butler held until 1965. A former Klan organizer, Swift formed the virulently anti-Semitic Christian Defense League in 1962. The pastor there was Wesley Swift, a Gale acolyte who preached that whites are the true Israelites and Jews are descended directly from a mating of Eve and the devil. In 1961, Butler began attending the church of the Anglo-Saxon Christian Congregation in Lancaster, Calif. While helping to "expose" communist teachers as a member of the California Committee to Combat Communism, Butler met one of his most important influences - William Potter Gale, a retired Army colonel who had served on the staff of Gen. Joe McCarthy's anti-communist hearings and sent money to support the senator's campaign. He was enthralled with broadcasts of Sen. "In those days, all we knew was that Hitler hated communists, and so did my folks - as we did as teenagers."īutler and his wife moved to the Los Angeles suburb of Montebello, Calif., after the war, raising two daughters. "In the newsreels of the day, I was thrilled to see the movies of the marching Germans," he recalled a half-century later. It was the German military, however, rather than American forces, that got Butler's Aryan juices flowing. He never saw action, but he did teach aircraft hydraulics to military mechanics. The couple attended a Presbyterian church in which they were married, later leaving when Butler concluded that the church's pastor was preaching communist doctrine.Īfter Pearl Harbor, Butler enlisted in the Army Air Corps. In 1941, Butler returned to Los Angeles and married Betty Litch. The two became friends and the valet explained to Butler India's caste system and the concept of racial purity, which impressed Butler deeply, according to his own recollections. The company sent him to Bangalore, India, to overhaul airplanes for the Royal Indian Air Force.īutler was given the honorary rank of captain in the Indian Air Force and was provided a Hindu valet. Butler studied aeronautical engineering at a city college there before taking a 25-cents-an-hour part-time job at Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Co. After the onset of the Depression, the family moved to East Los Angeles. The family moved to Denver in the early 1920s, where at age 11 Butler began delivering Liberty Magazine, where he read a serialized novel depicting the takeover of the United States by race-mixing Bolsheviks, a tale that fascinated him. Richard Girnt Butler was born east of Denver, the son of a machinist of German-English ancestry. Butler testimony in 2000 civil trial brought by the Southern Poverty Law Center The white race is the most endangered species on the face of the earth." "I advocated the preservation of the white race, whatever it takes to preserve it. That makes the white man a third-class citizen, in my mind." No hate laws can be applied to a nonwhite. Quoted in1999 in the Los A ngeles Times "I admired because it seemed like he was the only one who stood up." The government failed to prove their case and all the defendants were acquitted. In 1980, Butler and three followers were convicted of trespassing after they had a confrontation with a Boise, Idaho, motel owner who refused to rent them a conference room.īutler, along with most other principal leaders of the American radical right, was indicted by a federal grand jury in 1987 and tried in Fort Smith, Ark., for seditious conspiracy to overthrow the government by violence. The same year, he was charged in connection with an incident in which he pointed a gun outside the home of a movement rival. Butler lived out his final years in declining health and influence.īutler was arrested in 1975 in northern Idaho after he and several followers tried to "arrest" a police officer who was about to testify against a Butler ally accused of assault. But a civil lawsuit that year by the Southern Poverty Law Center finally crippled Butler and his Aryan Nations. Until 2000, Butler, a leading patriarch of the American neo-Nazi movement, remained unscathed by the crimes of those around him. Butler's 20-acre compound served for decades as a haven for ex-convicts, racist skinheads and various other anti-Semites and professional racists, many of whom committed major crimes. When a player registers three consecutive fouls, they automatically lose. A foul is committed when a player pockets the ball into their opponent's pocket, which costs them their turn. Keenness is needed to pocket the ball into a chosen pocket. Additionally, Europe hosts professional competitions known as pentathlons in which straight rail is featured as one of five carom billiards disciplines at which players compete, the other four being 47.1 balkline, one-cushion billiards, 71.2 balkline, and three-cushion billiards.Players are expected to be on their heels in accuracy to acquire points and be the winner. but retains popularity in Europe, where it is often played as a practice game for both balkline and three-cushion billiards, a development of one-cushion that has become the most prominent professional carom billiards game. Today, straight rail play is relatively uncommon in the U.S. tobacco card, circa 1880sĪlthough Schaefer was hailed as "the wizard", the repetitive nature of straight rail led to the development of balkline, where the table is divided by balklines into balk spaces where only a certain number of points can be scored before the balls must be driven away, and one-cushion billiards, where the cue ball must contact one of the cushions as part of the shot. With the balls barely moving and repetitively hit, there was little for the fans to watch. scored 690 points in a single inning at the table. straight rail professional tournament held in 1879, Jacob Schaefer Sr. The most important of these is the rail nurse which involves the progressive nudging of the object balls down a rail, keeping them close together and positioned at the end of each stroke in the same or near the same configuration such that the nurse can be replicated again and again. A nurse shot involves careful manipulation of object balls once gathered, which results in both balls being touched by the cue ball, but with all three balls barely moving, or that result in a position that can be duplicated over and over. A gather shot is one in which brings the cue ball and object balls together, ideally near a rail. Skill in the professional game increased mostly through the refinement of gather shots and the development of a variety of "nurse" techniques. Crotching was quickly banned in 1862, and players are required to move the ball out of the corner after three points. By moving the two object balls into the crotch, a player could endlessly score off of them, all the while keeping them immobilized in that corner. The contestants, Michael Phelan and a Monsieur Damon of Paris battled for seven hours, but the high run, set by Phelan, was just nine points.Ī technique soon developed, known as "crotching", referring to the space near the corner of a table where the rails meet. An early mention appears in the March 23, 1881, edition of The New York Times, wherein it is referred to as "the straight rail game." In 1855, the first public stakes straight rail match in the U.S. The derivation of the name straight rail is not clear, though may be a reference to the pocketless table. Straight rail, from which other carom games derive, is thought to date to the 18th century, although no exact time of origin is known. Games are played to a predetermined number of points. The object of the game is to score points by striking the player's assigned cue ball with a cue stick so it makes contact with both the opponent's cue ball and the object ball in the same stroke, known as a carom. The game is played on a pocketless unmarked billiard table, usually 10 by 5 feet (3.0 m × 1.5 m) in size, and three billiard balls, one, usually white, that serves as the cue ball for the first player, a second cue ball for the second player (differentiated by a spot or by being yellow), and an object ball, usually red. Straight rail, also called straight billiards, three-ball billiards, or the free game, is a discipline of carom billiards that is the most basic form of the game. The ALFLEX flight tests were conducted at the Woomera Airfield in Australia from July to August of 1996. The ALFLEX vehicle is based on a 37% scale 1992 HOPE design. The Automatic Landing Flight Experiment (ALFLEX) performed demonstrations for the automatic landing of a re-entry vehicle. The Orbital Re-Entry Flight Experiment (OREX), which was conducted in 1994, evaluated autonomous de-orbit technologies and vehicle thermal protection systems and materials to protect from aerodynamic heating during high-speed atmospheric re-entry. Hope-X planned to validate the technologies developed by the previous experiments (OREX, HYFLEX and ALFLEX and the HSFD) over a complete flight from orbit to landing. HOPE-X (H-II Orbiting Plane-Experiment) was to be the end result of a series of experiments: the Orbital Re-entry Experiment (OREX) completed in 1994, the Hypersonic Flight Experiment (HYFLEX) and the Automatic Landing Experiment (ALFLEX) both completed in 1996, and finally the High Speed Flight Demonstration (HSFD) which was planned for early 2002. The original parameters called for a 20,000 kg vehicle that would be lifted by the H-2 booster and would land by remote control in Japan or Australia. It should be noted that during these five tests, the Starship was never put into orbit and never even really approached space, contenting itself with climbing to an altitude of about 10 kilometers. The National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) began studying the development of a small crewless space shuttle in 1987. The four other landing attempts ended in an explosion and the destruction of the Starship. This is a maneuver that, out of five attempts, SpaceX has carried out only once, in May 2021. The originality of the Super Heavy is that as it has not been provided with "feet," it must return to exactly the same immense Boca Chica launch tower it took off from and be caught in flight by two "chopstick arms." As for the Starship, after having descended in a lying position back into the Earth's atmosphere, it will straighten up vertically and brake just before reaching the ground. In theory, these two parts of the rocket are able to land. This part is supposed, in the long term, to carry cargo or humans, which would make it the largest habitable vessel ever conceived. The rocket designed by Musk's company is composed of the first-stage Super Heavy booster equipped with 33 engines working simultaneously and the Starship second stage equipped with fins. On Monday, April 17, a first attempt was canceled 15 minutes before the fateful hour due to a frozen "pressurant valve," CEO Elon Musk tweeted. It was the event that all space fans had been waiting for. The test flight of the spacecraft was postponed multiple times since the summer of 2022. "As if the flight test was not exciting enough, Starship experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly before stage separation," SpaceX tweeted. The Starship capsule had been scheduled to separate from the first-stage rocket booster three minutes into the flight but separation failed to occur and the 120-meter-tall rocket blew up. The gigantic rocket successfully blasted off at 8:33 am from Starbase, the private SpaceX spaceport in Boca Chica, Texas. SpaceX Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, exploded on Thursday, April 20, during the first test flight of the spacecraft designed to send astronauts to the Moon, Mars and beyond. The final stage involves blister formation and skin peeling. Further exposure causes edema, leading to purplish discoloration. When tanning occurs, it is due to an increase in melanin pigmentation, after which it reddens and becomes more sensitive to touch. Sunburn has four stages: golden or tan, red, purplish-red, and blister red. Increased levels of melanin can add a protective effect decreasing the chances of sunburn. First-degree burns are most commonly due to radiation from sun exposure. Radiation injuries are due to extended exposure to ultraviolet light, for example, sunlight or tanning booth exposure, or from ionizing radiation such as radiation therapy or x-rays. Acids, on the other hand, cause coagulative necrosis. Alkali burns tend to be more severe, as they lead to a liquefactive necrosis process. Common household products that cause chemical burns include drain cleaners, paint thinner, and lye. Skin contact or oral mucosa ingestion cause an irritant effect that leads to chemical burn injury. These occur due to damage to tissue between entry and exit points.Īn acid or alkali can cause chemical burns. Severe injuries associated with these burns include cardiac arrhythmia and myoglobinuria. One can see the entry and exit point where the current passes through the body. In adults, these injuries are seen in inexperienced people working with electrical wiring and electricians working on high voltage power lines. Electrical burns are commonly seen in children playing with electrical cords or outlets. These burns present as first or second-degree burns however, third-degree burns may also result from prolonged exposure.Įlectrical burns are classified as high voltage, low voltage, or as flash burns secondary to an electric arc. These types of injuries are most common in children younger than age 5 and elderly patients. Scalding injuries are caused by exposure to hot water in baths or showers, hot drinks, oil, or steam. Thermal burns are most commonly due to fire, hot liquids, or contact with a hot surface. Common injuries are thermal, electrical, chemical, radiation, and nonaccidental. Burns can be classified by mechanism of injury, depth of burn in relation to layers of the skin, and severity of the burn. Target 12.c: Global data showed a rise in fossil fuel subsidies in 2021, after a brief fall in 2020 which was largely caused by a drop in energy prices. Target 12.7: In 2022, 67 national governments reported to UNEP on the implementation of Sustainable Public Procurement policies and action plans, up 50% from 2020. Companies continue to address their activities in attaining the SDGs, however, only 10% report on all 17 SDGs. The sustainability indicators that are most widely disclosed by companies include policies on water and energy and CO2 emission, occupational health and safety, as well as board diversity. Target 12.6: A preliminary analysis shows that around 70% of companies monitored publish sustainability reports in 2022, tripling since 2016. Target 12.3: The percentage of food lost globally after harvest on farm, transport, storage, wholesale, and processing levels, usually attributed to structural inadequacies in the countries, is estimated at 13.2% in 2021, unchanged from 2016 and far from the target of halving post-harvest food losses by 2030. In Northern America and Europe, the material footprint was about 14% higher than domestic material consumption, while in Latin America and the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa, the material footprint was lower than domestic material consumption by 17% and 32%, respectively. Target 12.2: In 2019, the total material footprint was 95.9 billion tonnes, close to the world’s domestic material consumption of 95.1 billion tonnes. Yet, reporting has been decreasing by 30% on average every year since 2019 and continues to reflect great regional imbalances with more than 50% of policy instruments reported from Europe and Central Asia. Target 12.1: Between 20, 484 policy instruments supporting the shift to sustainable consumption and production were reported by 62 countries and the European Union, with increasing linkages with global environmental commitments on climate, biodiversity, pollution and waste, as well as a particular attention to high-impact sectors. To deliver SDG12, it is crucial to implement policies that support the shift to sustainable practices and decouple economic growth from resource use. Reporting on corporate sustainability has tripled since the beginning of the SDG period, but the private sector will need to significantly improve reporting on activities that contribute to the SDGs. But the global economy also needs to speed up the decoupling of economic growth from resource use by maximizing the socio-economic benefits of resources while minimizing their negative impacts. Responsible consumption and production must be an integral part of the recovery from the pandemic. However, it also calls for more integrated research approaches and an explicit focus on which types of travel behaviour are substituted by the bike-transit combination. The world is seriously off track in its effort to halve per-capita food waste and losses by 2030.The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impacts on consumption and production patterns, with disruptions to global supply chains and changes in consumer behaviour. The review concludes that the bike-transit combination shows a promising path to sustainable urban mobility and is a topic worth further investigation. In general, the review reveals that bike-transit has shown potential in improving the performance of existing public transport systems, by expanding catchment areas and improving accessibility, but its impacts on car use have not been explicitly studied. Land use and built environment characteristics also play an important role, suggesting that the local context plays a significant role on its successful uptake. Improving them can have a positive impact on bike-transit uptake. These factors are mainly related to the quality of public transport, the cycling network and the integration of these two. The review showed that the bike-transit integration is complex and can be influenced by a variety of factors. The aim is two-fold: (i) to identify factors that influence its successful uptake, and (ii) to discuss the potential of the bike-transit combination and its impact on urban transport systems. This study is a review of the existing literature on the topic of bike-transit combination. In my opinion, a few minutes of calm is priceless. When I'm constantly being inundated with stressful news and/or worrying over how much work I have to get done, my gua sha tool allows me to focus on just one task and helps relieve tension in my face and neck after sitting in one spot all day. Nighttime is also when I typically moisturize my neck, so I'll naturally run my gua sha up my neck then as well. It helps the gua sha glide more easily, especially when it comes to the sensitive undereye area, which I try not to tug at whenever possible. As for me, at the end of my nighttime routine, I like to pair my gua sha with a nourishing facial oil like Amorepacific Botanical Radiance Oil, which is my current favorite, since it's super lightweight and made with soothing, antioxidant-rich ingredients like Jeju Island–sourced green tea water, green tea seed oil, and rapeseed flower oil. |
